-  SPROUT, SPROUT, LET IT ALL OUT  -

this year's sprouts are off to a great start. hopefully a headstart will lead to even larger harvests this coming season!

       March is here. The days are getting longer, winter's grueling chill is receding, and spring is popping to life. Here in the midwest, the first signs of spring growth are starting to sprout. It may be partially hidden beneath the fallen leaves of last autumn, but the first growth has sprouted. And that goes the same for the 2012 fruitman chili crops. It has been five weeks since the seeds were planted in the miniature greenhouse and all but two varieties (Jamaican Chocolate Habanero & Fatalii) have sprouted. It's hard to imagine there is still about seven or eight weeks left before they are transplanted outdoors. A bunch of the fruitman chili crops are off to a great head start this year. Some of these sprouts are BEASTS! It's time to start thinning out a few of the seed pods, as some have up to twelve seedlings to a single pod. Remember, one plant per seed pod!

       Hopefully within the next week the Jamaican Chocolate Habaneros and the Fatalii pepper plants will sprout up. It's too bad they haven't sprung up yet, but luckily I started them early, so there is still time. Probably around the beginning of April or so, the cover of the miniature greenhouse will come off and the seedlings will be on their own. Then, with any luck, we will have some warm calm days here on the farm, and the seedlings can spend some quality daylight hours outside soaking up rays and hardening off. But until then, they still need some good old tender loving care!
