Farm Update

The chili plants have really developed well this year, other than the slight hail damage to a few, but they'll be just fine. The store-bought chili plants I purchased and planted in early June have begun to really grow now that the sun is higher in the sky. A few of them have just recently started to blossom. I'm looking forward to enjoying some of their chilies hopefully within a few weeks. The chilies that I started from seed over the winter have grown incredibly. They are huge, and other than the super hot Bhut Jolokias and Habaneros, most if not all, have started to blossom. And earlier last week I found what every farmer desperately longs to see, THE FIRST CHILI...READ MORE

Oh Hail No!

Last Thursday started out as your typical hot summer's day; one which you pray for the comforts of air conditioning and beg for a tall glass of freshly-squeezed lemonade. However, once the sun went down you could just sense that there was a change in the air, a cause for concern for any farmer. At first, there was an eerily calm in the air, as if the world had just stopped. And then later, in the distance, you could start to see the darkened sky become aglow with white light, which crept closer and closer until full-fledged lighting strikes were distinguishable. The lightning crept closer and closer to the farm with an AMAZING DISPLAY of flashing lights every few seconds. It was incredible, I had never seen...READ MORE

Farmer Fridays

It's finally the end of the week, and that means it's time for another Farmer Friday. This week features a few recipes that might come in handy this 4th of July weekend along with some humorous links and videos. I hope everyone has a great long weekend and can get out the grill, cooler, flags and fireworks, and BBQ like the true Americans they are (to the excess!). Keep it safe America, but more importantly, KEEP IT SPICY! Feel free to submit (link) your own links, photos and videos for future Farmer Fridays...READ MORE

Father Farmer's Sauces

Well, it's officially summer now, and summer means one thing, HEAT! And this year so far, each day seems to be hotter than the last. I have been making sure to keep a close eye on the crops, making sure they don't dry out. The soil seems to dry out every two days or so, but the all of the plants are growing well. The chilies I started from seed during the winter are creepin' up towards my waist, yet still I'll have to wait at least a few more weeks until I am able to taste the first chili of the season...READ MORE

Father Farmer's Sauces

About a week ago, this farmer took the weekend off tending to the crops to spend some quality time with my father for Father's Day. It felt good to take some time away from my farm see how my old man farmer's crops were doing, and prod him for any farm-related wisdom I could get. He has been farming for as long as I can remember. Now, he no longer grows quite the crop he used to, but he still has a handful of chili plants among other vegetables and herbs...READ MORE

Sea Magic Fertilizer

Just a quick post today for those of you with short attention spans. I hope all you local fellow farmers out there survived the storm that rolled through these parts last night. WHAT A DOOSEY! Heavy rain and high winds could have been disastrous. Luckily I was able to protect what crops I could (some have gotten almost too tall to really move), and was spared any damage to the plants. Hope you were too...READ MORE

Secret Sauces

There are an unimaginable variety of different hot sauce available these days. In the past 10 years the market for spicy sauces has exploded leading to both an increase in mass production of your everyday brands (Cholula, Frank's Red Hot, Louisiana Hot Sauce) and a bushel full of small independent craft sauciers (probably a word). I reviewed several of these lesser known craft sauces...READ MORE
